Getting rid of toxic chemicals in your home will not only improve the eco-friendliness of your home and keep you and your family safe, but it will also weigh less on your conscience.  The knowledge that you are no longer contributing to ground water pollution, and that your cleaners aren't evaporating toxic chemicals into the air, that will help clear your mind too.

Floor Cleaner

1/8 Cup Liquid Soap

1/4-1/2 Cup White Vinegar or Lemon Juice

1/2 Cup Herbal Tea (peppermint has antibacterial qualities)

Combine all ingredients in a pail with 3 gallons of warm water.  Swirl until it suds.  Rinse with 1 Cup of Vinegar in 3 Gallons of cool water.

 

Wood Floor Cleaner

Use 1/2 Cup vinegar per Gallon of water, wipe dry

 

Carpet Spot Remover

Blot Imediately.  Sprinkle with baking soda, cornstarch or Borax and let dry.  Wash with club soda and vacuum.

 

Wood Cleaner

1/4 Cup White Vinegar

1/4 Cup Water

1/2 Teaspoon Liquid Soap

a few drops of Olive Oil

Combine the ingredients in a bowl, saturate a sponge with the mixture, squeeze out the excess and wash surfaces.  The smell of vinegar will dissapate in a few hours.

 

Furniture Polish

1/2 teaspoon of Olive Oil

1/4 Cup Vinegar or Lemon Juice

Mix ingredients in a jar.  Dab a soft rag into the solution and wipe onto wood surfaces.

 

Window Cleaner

1/4 Cup White Vinegar

1/2 Teaspoon liquid soap

2 Cups water

Combine ingredients into a spray bottle and shake to blend.

 

Oven Cleaner

1 Cup or More Baking Soda

a squirt or 2 liquid soap

Sprinkle water generously on the bottom of the oven, then cover with enough baking soda to completely white out the surface.  Sprinkle more water over the top and allow to sit overnight.  Wipe up grease the next morning; then with a bit of liquid soap on a damp sponge, wash remaining residue from the oven.

 

Unclog Drains

Sprinkle generous amounts of baking soda in and around clogged drain.  Follow with a cup of white vinegar.  Repeate as necessary, then flush with very hot or boiling water.

 

"Green" Dishwashing Detergent

4 Parts Borax

4 Parts Baking Soda

1 Part Citric Acid

Combine in waterproof container.  Use 2 tablespoons in dishwasher (1 in Pre-wash and 1 in regular)  For extra cleaning power you can add white vinegar to the rinse compartment.

Simple supplies for making your own "Green" cleaning supplies:

  • Baking Soda

  • Bon Ami Cleanser

  • Borax

  • Cornstarch

  • Lemon Juice

  • Liquid Soap

  • Vegetable Oil

  • Salt

  • Washing Soda

  • White Vinegar

  • Citric Acid
