Organic food is produced according to certain production standards set forth by the USDA.

For crops, it means they weren't grown with:

  • conventional pesticides

  • artificial fertilizers

  • sewage sludge

and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or food additives.

For animals, it means they were raised without:

  • routine use of antibiotics

  • growth hormones.

Also, at all levels, organic food must be produced without the use of genetically modified organisms.Organic Beets - Rich in Calcium and Iron and have been used for medicinal purposes, primarily focusing on disorders of the liver.

A USDA Organic seal identifies products with at least 95% organic ingredients.

As the consumer demand for organic foods continues to increase, high volume sales through mass outlets, like supermarkets, rapidly replaces the direct farmer connection once thought to be synonymous with organic food. For supermarket consumers, food production is not easily observable, and product labeling, like "certified organic" is relied on. Government regulations and third-party inspectors are looked to for assurance.

A "certified organic" label is usually the only way for consumers to know that a processed product is organic.
